Scagliola Plaster and Run Work
European-Style Scagliola Decorative Casting Created Mantles & Fireplace Surrounds.
Scagliola (SKAL·YO'LA) n. an imitation marble, made of various materials, using artisan techniques to simulate organic stone, finely polished.
For centuries, plaster has been used to surround fireplaces; plaster is inert, it does not burn. Plaster is heat-sink, it holds the heat long after the fire is out. Plaster is very durable when cast and dried proerly and used in a dry environment. It is far lighter than concrete and without reinforcing it is not prone to cracking as always seems to happen with concrete - even with rebar.
Scagliola Process
- Original artisan-crafted, full-size styrofoam mock-up allows an accurate real-view from all angles and light sources.
This is the perfect way to pre-visualize how the plaster castings will look 2 months later when they are dry enough to install.
- The styrofoam mock-up pieces are used to fabricate plywood tooling molds into which European-style scagliola plaster can be added and manipulated to look like real marble. The molds can be filled with straight plaster when the design calls for a troweled on surface.
