Concrete Surfaces FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What is Milestone (Hybridized Portland Cement)?

The technology for Milestone Hybridized Portland Cement has been used for years. It was invented in 1980 by Don Miles, a Seattle plasterer. It is comprised of a three coat application process for polymer modified cement products. Each component is designed expressly to work together as a complete unit. This results in an extremely durable coating and one that becomes an integral part of the concrete surface both chemically and mechanically. It is highly resistant to most stains, chemicals, salts, fungi and UV deterioration. Furthermore, the polymer resins add an element of flexibility which allows the overlay material to move somewhat with the concrete substrate, substantially decreasing the chances of de-lamination in extreme climates.

The other products we use, Texston, Skimstone and Synergy are variations on this same technology.

  2. Where can I use polymer concrete overlay?

Hybridized Portland Cement overlays are perfect for any high traffic commercial application, as well as for less demanding projects in or around the home. Here are just a few examples: restaurants, bars, spas, balconies, patios, walkways, pool decks, sidewalks, garages, or over any stable and properly prepared concrete surface. Go to the gallery pages of this section to view some of the endless possibilities.

  3. How long does this process take?

The time needed depends upon the size of the job and the amount of preparation needed. The actual application process has five steps. First a layer of Synergy is hand-trowelled on to bond to the existing surface and create a new level and blemish free palate upon which to start the coloring process. Second, a pigmented layer is hand-trowelled on as a base color and a very smooth surface. Third, pigments are hand applied to create subtle variations and visual depth. Fourth, the surface is sealed and preserved with Enviropoxy. Fifth, the surface is hand waxed to a glowing patina.

Assuming we start with a clean level slab it usually takes 5 days to finish the job. The project must be allowed to dry or cure between coats of the hand-trowelled Portland Cement overlay.

  4. Is it smelly or messy? How will the installation affect my routine?

The products we use are not toxic. While it is important to avoid ingesting them, they do not produce noxious fumes that will force you out of your house although there is a mild odor of ammonia produced during the troweling and initial dry time. Sanding does create some dust but a vacuum attachment on our sander controls the majority of the dust. The five step process does mean that we will need to have access to the work area for several days and the sanding and vacuuming equipment we use on steps 2 and 3 does make some noise.

  5. How do I care for my new surface?

Hybridized Portland Cement overlays are very serviceable. Inside, just sweep or mop as you would with tile or linoleum. Outside, use regular cleaning with a hose and broom and the finished product will look great for years. An occasional coat of sealer or re-waxing is all that is required to keep your surface looking new.

  6. How does the cost compare to other materials?

In most cases, Hybridized Portland Cement overlay is a very cost-effective alternative to slate, fieldstone, marble, tile, brick, wood, terrazzo, or most any other interior or exterior surface. This is especially true when you consider the life expectancy of the material.

Our professionals have been trained to use the cement compounds and will be available to explain any questions unanswered by the information here.
