Ornamental Plaster

Mead L. Powers

Born in Bremerton, raised in Portland, attended Portland State, University of Washington and then Burnley School of Professional Art in Seattle.

A commercial photographer from 1972 to 1982 working for numerous clients including Rainier Beer, K2 Skis, Boeing, DoubleTree Plaza Hotels, etc.

While on a daily assignment photographing the Four Seasons Olympic Hotel during its remodeling in 1981 he observed the restoration of the ornamental plaster and decided to change professions and become a sculptor.

Mead and his wife Nikki have a house in West Seattle built in 1926 with ornamental plaster crown moldings and with the same techniques he saw at the Olympic Hotel he began producing copies of these old designs. He developed methods to sculpt new designs and make rubber-tooling-molds for making plaster castings. He named this business CoveStone Sculptural Moldings and he applied this craft work to many local homes and a few commercial ceilings including the Sears South center women's lingerie department.

He took a commission in 1991 making plaster castings for fireplace surrounds for condos on Lake Union and met and began working for Don Miles the inventor of Milestone Hybridized Portland Cement. He was amazed at how well this product worked for his fireplace hearths but mainly how much he liked trawling this material over floors and surfaces.

Mead has lived in the same house and has had the same business license since 1972, has been married since 1968, raised a daughter (a librarian) and a son (in the Coast Guard) and has decades of references and examples of his craft work. His background and experience have given him the ability to give the client a lasting, beautiful product.
